The right Halloween cruise comes down to one question: who is sharing your stateroom?
Disney builds October around children in costume. Virgin Voyages builds its fall around adults in red. I have sailed both, and the two products share a season and almost nothing else.
I have done Halloween on the High Seas twice. Once, just after cruising restarted following the pandemic in 2021 on the Disney Magic, and again on the then-brand-new Disney Wish in October 2022. My seasonal sailing on Virgin Voyages was on the Scarlet Lady. I’ve done 4 cruises on each brand, and I don’t have a favorite. I love them both for different reasons. Disney or Virgin Voyages: The Short Answer
Book Disney for families with young children and multigenerational groups. Book Virgin Voyages for couples and friend groups who want the party to run past midnight. Virgin sails adults-only on every departure, so a family traveling with a 12-year-old has already made the choice.
Multigenerational travel is where Disney earns its fare. Grandparents and parents get an adults-only pool and a proper dinner service while the grandchildren collect candy in costume.
What Halloween on the High Seas Looks Like on Disney
Disney’s Halloween on the High Seas is a themed layer on an otherwise standard sailing, and Pirate Night stays on the schedule. The line offers it on select September and October domestic departures across the fleet, with the Disney Destiny joining the lineup for the first time in 2026.
Mickey’s Mouse-Querade Party anchors the celebration. Families trick-or-treat onboard, characters appear in their Halloween costumes, and Ginger, the Pumpkin Tree, takes over the Grand Hall.
Filter for sailings labeled Halloween on the High Seas before you book. Not every fall departure carries the theme, and a late-September sailing on the same ship can look identical on paper.
I’m so lucky to have Mr. Jet Setting with Me, who spent two hours running between the 4th and 5th deck to wait in line while I took photos with each character in their Halloween best. I didn’t miss a single one, including a special one offered only at the Halloween on the High Seas sailings, which you can see above: Daisy, Minnie, and Clara as the Sanderson Sisters. Priceless.
What Virgin Voyages Brings to Halloween at Sea
Virgin markets its fall theme as “No Kids. Just Treats,” and the adults-only policy shapes every hour of the program. The themed sailings run from mid-October into November.
A costume party and contest headlines the voyage, often folded into Scarlet Night on shorter itineraries, with prizes such as Virgin Red points, bar tabs and future cruises. The Festival Stage goes spooky for the season, and Valiant Lady was slated as the 2026 Halloween flagship with its own themed show and live band.
Scarlet Night is the peak. The Happenings Cast opens the evening around 9 p.m., the pool deck fills with sailors in red and costumes, and a DJ carries the after-party late into the night.
Pack two looks. Scarlet Night calls for red, and the costume contest rewards full commitment.
Which Halloween Sailing Costs More?
Compare per-person value rather than sticker price. Disney Halloween departures generally carry a slight premium over comparable non-themed sailings. Virgin prices fares per cabin and includes its restaurant lineup in the base fare. For reference, Brilliant Lady’s seven-night Mexican Riviera Halloween sailing from Los Angeles in 2026 opened at $1,946 per cabin, double occupancy, before gratuities.
A Disney Halloween cruise for four and a Virgin getaway for two are different purchases. Price each one on its own terms.
When to Book for Next October
Book 10 to 12 months out. Disney’s Halloween weeks overlap school fall breaks, and family staterooms move first. Virgin tends to add themed departures as the season approaches. In 2026, Brilliant Lady added two new Halloween sailings from Los Angeles after the original schedule was set, with one replacing a charter.
Once you have your guest list, choosing the right Halloween cruise is easy. Choose the ship for the people in your cabin. The costume is the easy part.
